Devi Charan Barua Girls’ College of Jorhat was the first women college in Upper Assam, which was established in the year 1955 and was named after a renowned person of Jorhat Rai Bahadur Devicharan Barua. The college was started with arts stream with enrolment of nly 56 students and 12 teachers in the college but now it now become full-fledged arts and science Faculty with 1899 students from both the streams.
The Department of Geography was also established in the same year i.e., on 1955 and was introduced only in the intermediate course known as Commercial Geography. The founder teacher of this Department was Prof. A.K. Baruah and Late Prof. G. Sengupta joined in 1957 to fill the position vacated by Prof. A.K. Baruah.
The joining of C.K. Natarajan in 1960 has enlightened the department to a new direction. He single handed (from 1960-1977) built the department into one of the premier department in the college. The present shape of the department is attributed to his quality work and positive attitude.
Change is the law of nature. It is the fundamental of development and progress. Geography, one of the subjects that studies both Natural Science and Social Science. It is the study of Earth as the home of man.
The function of Geography is to train future citizen to imagine accurately the conditions of the great world stage and to help them to think safely about political and social problems around the world. Geography is the science which treats the inter-relation between technologically advanced man and environment and it helps in decision-making process of local condition and space relation.
Geography is a focus within the curriculum for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development. It is also an important link between the nature and social science. As pupils study Geography, they encounter different Societies and cultures.
